The Sonodrum Kalimba / Sonolimba is handcrafted from high-quality African coral wood, which is characterized by an accurate, loud tone and good response. The increased density of the coral wood gives our kalimba a slightly deeper sound.

What is a kalimba?

The kalimba is a handy, natural wooden block onto which the individual metal ore bars are delicately handcrafted to act as a piano. The arrangement of the individual bars creates a beautiful melody when played.

How is the sound created?

The sound vibrations are absorbed by the real wood block, creating a deep acoustic that defines the overall tone. The flat surface on the top makes the mid and high frequencies sound clearer and purer.

Two variants

Our kalimba is available in two different versions: one with 17 keys and one with 21. The keys are rounded and made of ore steel for a pleasant feel. The rounded edges of the wood ensure that the kalimba is comfortable to hold.

Easy to tune

The kalimba's notes can be tuned by sliding the lamellae back and forth. In principle, this allows tuning to any musical system. However, tuning is determined based on intervals rather than steps of a scale. In a diatonic scale, for example, the notes alternate to the right and left of the long central lamella. Plucking two adjacent lamellas produces a consonant third; plucking three produces a triad, and so on. Therefore, when playing freely, dissonances of a second can only be produced by plucking a left and a right lamella, which is why the sound is usually consonant.
